Taking Levemir®

You may have concerns about adding an injectable medicine to your daily routine. But it’s important to realize the positive effect it may have on the management of your diabetes. Once you gain a little practice, Levemir® injections can become part of your daily routine.

Features of Levemir® FlexPen®

Parts of the Levemir® FlexPen®: prefilled insulin reservoir, dose window, and dose correction
  • Accurate dosing. Turn the dose selector to select the number of units you need to inject, from 1 to 60 units
  • Levemir® FlexPen® should be used with caution in patients with visual impairment who may rely on audible clicks to dial their dosea
  • More insulin than a vial. One box of Levemir® FlexPen® contains 5 disposable pens, each prefilled with 300 units of Levemir® for a total of 1500 units of Levemir® insulin.b You’ll get 50% more insulin than you get from a vial (1000 units)
  • Insurance coverage. Levemir® FlexPen® is covered by most health insurance and Medicare plans nationwide

aAfter dose counter has returned to 0, keep needle in skin for 6 seconds before the needle is removed. If you do not, you may not have received your full dose and you should check your blood sugar more often because you may need more insulin. You may or may not hear an audible click at end of dose.

bNeedles are sold separately and may require a prescription in some states. Needles and Levemir® FlexPen® must not be shared.

If you prefer to take your insulin with a vial and syringe or if you need to receive your insulin in a vial for insurance reasons, Levemir® is also available in a vial.

Storage before use

  • Store unused Levemir® FlexPen® and vials in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C)
  • Do not freeze Levemir®Do not use Levemir® if it has been frozen
  • Keep unopened Levemir® in the carton to protect from light
  • Unused pens and vials may be used until the expiration date printed on the label, if kept in the refrigerator

Storage after use

  • Keep at room temperature (up to 86°F) or refrigerated for up to 6 weeks
  • Keep away from direct heat and light
  • Dispose after 42 days, even if there is insulin left in the pen or vial
  • Do not store Levemir® FlexPen® with the needle in place
